I am...

There are so many reasons why it's important to be true to who you are. When I was in middle school and high school, I thought it was great to be known as the "Artist" among my friends. I felt unique in a world that it was so hard to fit in to.

Recently, it came to my attention that some of my old friends still refer to me as the "Art Girl."

So, 20 or so years later, why did I instantly feel a slight pang of sadness and jealousy to not be considered normal? I am proud of what I do and I do it with passion, yet to hear myself referred as the Art Girl, I instantly felt unaccomplished, like I was transported back to third grade and nothing had changed. But–

Quickly, I changed my mind. DUH, being an "Art Girl" is actually SO much more than that.

Us Art Girls (and guys), we connect lines, convey emotion, promote happiness, solve problems...in some ways, we shape lives. I'll probably never be able to explain or prove myself the way I'd like, I probably won't ever live a lavish lifestyle, but, darn it – will it be fulfilling!

I am and forever will be an Art Girl...and I vow to always be proud of not being normal.

Cheers!

P.S. And thank you to my high school friends for a new picture book idea. :)

  3. not everyone has such talent. Enjoy it and live it up. No shame in that. I love being the artist and don't consider that being unsuccessful.
